SEO or Google Ads: Where Should a Medical Practice Start?

SEO or Google Ads: Where Should a Medical Practice Start?

Both bring patients from search. Which one to fund first depends on how soon you need them and what you already have.

A practice with a limited budget often has to choose where to begin. Search engine optimization and Google Ads both put you in front of people who are looking for care. They differ in speed, cost and what they leave behind.

What each one does well

  • Google Ads can bring calls within days. You choose the services, the area and the hours, and you can stop at any time. When the budget stops, so do the leads.
  • SEO takes longer to show results, usually months for competitive terms, but the pages and the local visibility you build keep working without a cost per click.

Start with ads if

  • You have open capacity now and need appointments this quarter.
  • You are opening a new location or adding a provider.
  • You want to learn quickly which services and messages bring the right patients.

Start with SEO if

  • Your schedule is reasonably full and you are building for next year.
  • Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or your website is slow and thin. Ads sent to a weak site waste money.
  • Competitors outrank you for the services you most want to grow.

The foundations come first either way

Whichever you choose, three things have to be in place: a complete Google Business Profile for every location, a page for each main service that makes it easy to call or book, and tracking that counts calls and forms. Without these, neither channel can be judged fairly.

Most practices end up running both: ads for demand now, SEO for demand that compounds. The order depends on your capacity and your starting point.
